US Attempts Assassination of Italian Anti-War Journalist
Or so Giuliana Sgrena would have you believe. If you haven't heard, Italian "journalist" Giuliana Sgrena has been held hostage in Iraq for a month. Last Friday, she was released. While riding in a car with two to four (depending on who you listen to) Italian security agents, US forces opened fire on the vehicle.
According to the US, the vehicle was approaching a check-point and refused signals to slow down as well as warning shots fired over the car and eventually into the engine block.
According to Sgrena, there was no warning, indeed, there was no check-point. The US opened fire without warning. Sgrena seems to believe that it was all one big conspiracy. Since Sgrena is a "journalist" who is not in favor of the war, the US did not want her to be returned. Indeed, according to Sgrena, her captors warned her of this:
They (the kidnappers) declared that they were committed to the fullest to freeing me but I had to be careful, "the Americans don't want you to go back." What is unanswered is why? Why didn't the Americans want her to come back? Why would the terrorists know the Americans didn't want her back? Why was she kidnapped in the first place? After all, the Italians are hardly one of our staunch allies in the war. Is it possible that Ms. Sgrena has an agenda? Hmmmmm....
The US states that the car ignored "arm signals, flashing white lights, and warning shots (fired) in front of the car..." Sgrena has contradicted herself, telling the Italian station La 7 Television that "there was no bright light, no warning." She later told Italian magistrate Franco Ionta that the shots came from "a patrol that shot as soon as they LIT US UP WITH A SPOTLIGHT (emphasis added.)"
What seems to be lacking from all of the reporting is that Sgrena is not just a "journalist." She is a Journalist that works for the Italian "newspaper" Il Manifesto. In my first cited article, CNN describes Il Manifesto as "left-leaning." In fact, a quick google of "Il Manifesto left-leaning" shows numerous sources describing the paper as "left-leaning" or "left-wing." Actually, the paper's full title is "Il Manifesto: quotidiano comunista"...Communist Daily Paper. Describing a Communist paper as "left-leaning" is sort of like describing Jimmy Swaggart as "slightly right of center." Ms. Sgrena is a communist working for a communist publication. Both she and the "newspaper" she works for are fervently against the war in Iraq. She's no "journalist," she's what Neal Boortz described today as a PROPAGANDIST. Now, apparently some news reports have pointed out Sgrena's affiliation with the worst experiment in governance in human history. All day today, though, I've listened to two different radio stations, one playing ABC news and one playing CBS news. Both have had NUMEROUS reports on the story, and I've only heard her described as "Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena."

| All Martha... |
| 03.04.05 (4:47 pm) [edit] |
...All the fucking time.
Well, Martha Stewart has been released from prison. The one question I have is, WHO CARES? Honestly, with all that is going on in the world right now, who honestly gives a rat's ass? I turned on my trusty idiot box this morning, and there's live coverage of the airport where Martha's plane is waiting. Live coverage of Martha arriving at the airport. Live coverage of Martha boarding the plane. Live coverage of Martha walking through her home. Live coverage of Martha's first dump as a free woman. Who cares? It's not like Uncle Charlie was just pardoned. Such is life in America. Reports of Russian Spetsnaz troops removing WMD's from Iraq prior to the invasion are floating around, and we're taking pictures of Martha scooping up dog shit in her front yard.
Nutty-Ass Brady Campaigners At It Again Well, the Brady Campaign is after "Cop Killers" again. Just to recap for those of you who aren't keeping up, anything labeled "Cop Killer" is also erroneously identified as "armor piercing." "Armor Piercing" is just another way of saying "high powered." My 30-06 rifle fires bullets that could be labeled as "Cop Killer" bullets. The simple fact is, the body armor worn by police officers is only designed to stop relatively low-powered ammunition fired from hand guns. It cannot stop high velocity bullets fired from most hunting rifles. I use my rifle for hunting, never shot at a cop that I can recall. "Cop-killer" is just a term dreamed up by anti-gun pansies who want to drum up hysteria over something they don't like. People who aren't in the know think "Hmmm, COP Killers? Well, those can't be good."
